Marinating in Love

[reprinted from July 18, 2011]

Behold, Yahweh stood above it, and said, “I am Yahweh, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac. The land whereon you lie, to you will I give it, and to your seed. Your seed will be as the dust of the earth, and you will spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south. In you and in your seed will all the families of the earth be blessed. Behold, I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go, and will bring you again into this land. For I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken of to you.”    Genesis 28:13-15 (WEB)

Yahweh, you have searched me, and you know me.
You know my sitting down and my rising up.
You perceive my thoughts from afar.
You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways.
For there is not a word on my tongue, but, behold, Yahweh, you know it altogether.
You hem me in behind and before. You laid your hand on me.
This knowledge is beyond me.            Psalm 139:1-6 (WEB)

The Word to me today is that the knowledge of God’s love is really beyond my ability to understand.

Jacob has met with God. Jacob is given promises by God. He will have descendants as numerous as the dust on the ground. And those descendants will cover the earth. Now Jacob did not have a concept of the reality of that promise. He didn’t know how big the earth was. He didn’t know about the Western Hemisphere. And as extraordinary as that promise was, look at the last two sentences.

“Behold, I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go, and will bring you again into this land. For I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken of to you.”

God. Creator of all that is – makes the promise that He will not leave me. Do I get this? The promises made to Jacob were also made to his descendants. They were made to me. They were made to you.

God will never leave me. Would you go to the Mall of America with your infant child and just leave them? “I’m sorry, child. You’re too much trouble. You’ve been too naughty. I’m going to go find some child who is better.” God is the perfect parent. He loves without conditions.

God knows that I will go off His path. He will not leave me and He will bring me back to the place He has for me. If I shake my fist, turn to my way, God will be there when I realize that my way didn’t work and turn back around. He will lead me home. He will not leave until He has completed the work in me (Philippians 1:6).

God knows me. He knows every dusty hidden corner. He knows every corner of my mind. There is not a thought that I have that He does not hear. And despite knowing all this about me, God chooses to be right here with me. He isn’t standing off and away from me. He is here. In front of me, behind me, wherever there is a place, God is there with me.

Genesis 28:17 says that Jacob was frightened by God being in the place with him. When I allow God to come close, am I frightened? What frightens me? Think about that.

I can keep God at a distance if I just keep walking a bit off His path. I can say my memorized prayers, sing my distant songs, as I show up for the obligatory one or two hours each week. Take time off during the summer and holidays. Don’t get too fanatical about God. Just believe in Him but don’t make Him the #1 priority or head of my home. Don’t give God the final control. (Notice I said “give”)

Romans 8 was another lectionary text for this week. It also tells me about the depth of Jesus’ love. I am going to be marinating in that study, in His presence this week. Will you join me?

Heaven is a Wonderful Place

Then the Angel showed me Water-of-Life River, crystal bright. It flowed from the Throne of God and the Lamb, right down the middle of the street. The Tree of Life was planted on each side of the River, producing twelve kinds of fruit, a ripe fruit each month. The leaves of the Tree are for healing the nations. Never again will anything be cursed. The Throne of God and of the Lamb is at the center. His servants will offer God service—worshiping, they’ll look on his face, their foreheads mirroring God. Never again will there be any night. No one will need lamplight or sunlight. The shining of God, the Master, is all the light anyone needs. And they will rule with him age after age after age.     Revelation 22:1-5 (The Message)

I like The Message paraphrase to read sometimes because it reads like a novel. In this passage, it makes it easy for me to imagine what John saw. The beauty that he tried to describe about a place that I will someday see.

Do you look forward to Heaven? I do. And the more events that happen here in this world, the more I look forward to my real home. I feel more and more like I don’t belong here. That I am a stranger in a strange land. That I am a alien here.

“But you’ll have to die to get there, Jody!” That is true unless the Father decides it is time for Jesus to come back before He decides it’s time for my temporary body to die. But I have been very blessed to attend the death of many people who were Believers and it was a holy experience. In many cases there was a discernible glow in the room. I knew that God was there to take His child home. There was peace. There was joy because there was no longer any separation.

I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had disappeared, and so had the sea. Then I saw New Jerusalem, that holy city, coming down from God in heaven. It was like a bride dressed in her wedding gown and ready to meet her husband.
I heard a loud voice shout from the throne:
God’s home is now with his people. He will live with them, and they will be his own. Yes, God will make his home among his people. He will wipe all tears from their eyes, and there will be no more death, suffering, crying, or pain. These things of the past are gone forever.”     Revelation 21:1-4 (CEV)

I was reading this passage to my son as he lay dying. As I repeated the words that there would be no tears or suffering or pain, he smiled a little and his eyes got real big like he saw something spectacular. And closed his eyes and stopped breathing. He had left. I believe he moved toward what he saw.

When someone we love dies, it is so very hard to let them go. But our time apart is so very small when counted against eternity. 30, 40, even 50 years is nothing compared to time that never ends. And when we are together again there will be no tears, no suffering, no crying or pain – no death! Have you looked at a sunrise? Have you stood at the ocean? Have you climbed a mountain and looked out? Have you bent to sniff an opening rose? These are all just glimpses into what is waiting for us at home with all our family who also love our LORD.

Tough Love

When the city came into view, he [Jesus] wept over it. “If you had only recognized this day, and everything that was good for you! But now it’s too late. In the days ahead your enemies are going to bring up their heavy artillery and surround you, pressing in from every side. They’ll smash you and your babies on the pavement. Not one stone will be left intact. All this because you didn’t recognize and welcome God’s personal visit.”     Luke 19:44 (The Message)

Jesus’ prophetic word was pretty much fulfilled in 70 A.D. with Rome’s destruction of Jerusalem. The only thing left today is what we know as The Wailing Wall. It’s important to catch these points:

Jesus wept.

Despite His sadness, God did not back down from the consequences.

The consequences happened because the children of God made a choice.

I believe that if a parent is a good and loving parent, they will have experienced “tough love.” Tough love happens when a child has been taught right from wrong and yet makes a choice that can bring terrible consequences if not corrected. The parent warns the child not to make that same choice again as it is an important point of learning and so there will be unpleasant consequences if the child chooses one way and rewards if they choose another. But the child wants what he/she wants and so the unpleasant consequences occur and something wonderful is lost and everyone is sad. Being a parent is not for the weak!

God wept because His children continued to ignore the Gift that God had sent them because Jesus was not the kind of Messiah that they wanted. Their idea of God’s kingdom was earthly. God was giving them an eternal Kingdom. Are we still looking for the comfort and status of an earthly reward? Do I take the promises of “abundant life” and “great rewards” and think of what God can give me now? Is Jesus sad because I cannot see beyond my own physical wants? Am I still so blind?

God makes a personal visit into my life every day. When I take time to pray, have a conversation with Jesus, then God is in my life. From every breath that I take to my concerns on any given day, to loved ones who are ill or in harm’s way, God is here in my life and wants to be in my life. He hopes that I will make the choice to be with Him. But He is willing to do some tough love so that I will make a good choice. That’s what a good parent does.

My Bottom Line

The message is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. This is the message of faith that we proclaim: if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation.         Romans 10:8-10 (HCSB)

Lectionary texts: Deuteronomy 26:1-11, Psalm 91:1-2, 9-16, Romans 10:8-13, Luke 4:1-13

This message is in my heart and in my mouth. It is the “bottom line” by which I live. It’s not something that I had thought about until I read this passage – really read it – about 15 years ago. I never thought of a sentence or two that defined my life. I always felt my life was too big, too complicated to boil it down to a few syllables. Then I read this and I realized that if I was asked to bring my life, what I stand for, what I believe in, this may be as close as I will ever get to intelligible words.

Jesus is LORD. How do I know this? For me, I know because He changed the world. This one life changed everything 2000 years ago and is still doing it. Twelve people shared their stories of Jesus with others. And now of the 6+ billion people in the world today, it is estimated that 33% are professing Christians. Jesus’ life and words have forever changed me.

Jesus is alive. If Jesus did not rise from the dead, then it would be hard for me to believe that He was God. He would just be a really good man better than David and Peter and Paul to be sure. But I want God to overcome the suffering, pain, and death of this world. If this is all there is – I want a rebate on my life because I want more. Jesus is alive because He is actively working in my life today. His words are relevant today.

I am saved from death. With what science we have so far, no one has been able to disprove Jesus. No, they haven’t been able to prove Him either but if Jesus didn’t really exist, if He really didn’t rise from the dead, it seems like it would be easier to disprove Him. And so by faith, I know that Jesus overcame death and because I believe in Him, know I need Him, and commit myself to Him, He has promised me an eternal home that is not destroyed by death. I know that no matter what comes into my life here, Jesus has overcome suffering and death for me for all eternity. Death is nothing more than a door for me to walk through to a time and place I can only imagine.

I have a story to share. I have a story of Hope to share. I have a story about the anchor that holds me when the storms are raging. I have a story about a Friend who is always there to talk to, always gives wise advice, and never rejects me. I believe Jesus is who most people are looking for in their lives, they just don’t know it and are reluctant to take that step of faith. Does my life encourage them? Ah, that’s a good question.

Every day I ask God to take control of my life and use it however He chooses. I pray that I have ears to hear Him and a heart that is soft and tender to only His way. And that every day He hears, “Use me today, LORD.”

Come.

“Come, everyone who is thirsty, come to the waters;
and you without money, come, buy, and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost!
Why do you spend money on what is not food,
and your wages on what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good,
and you will enjoy the choicest of foods.
Pay attention and come to Me; listen, so that you will live.
I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
the promises assured to David…

Seek the Lord while He may be found;
call to Him while He is near.
Let the wicked one abandon his way and the sinful one his thoughts;
let him return to the Lord, so He may have compassion on him,
and to our God, for He will freely forgive.

For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
and your ways are not My ways.”
This is the Lord’s declaration.
For as heaven is higher than earth, so My ways are higher than your ways,
and My thoughts than your thoughts.
For just as rain and snow fall from heaven and do not return there
without saturating the earth and making it germinate and sprout,
and providing seed to sow and food to eat,
so My word that comes from My mouth will not return to Me empty,
but it will accomplish what I please
and will prosper in what I send it to do.”       Isaiah 55:1-3, 6-11 (HCSB)

Come. Listen. Pay attention. Seek. Call. Promises.

God said it all. May I have ears to hear and may my heart receive. I have nothing more to add today.

Refreshing Rain

Ask the Lord for rain in the spring, for he makes the storm clouds.
And he will send showers of rain so every field becomes a lush pasture.     Zechariah 10:1 (NLT)

I am turning my face up to receive the refreshing rain from God today, like a spring rain. I know those of you who are living in freezing temperatures might have to turn toward memories and remember that spring will come after the snows of winter but just close your eyes and think of that day when you step outside and smell that spring rain.

“Refreshing rain” has been a prayer on my lips and continuously in my spirit this week. Friends and family are going through treatments or supporting loved ones who are. My loving LORD is in “the miracle business” and I will not stop asking God for complete healing but in the “right now” my prayer often turns to asking that He bless them with courage and not let go of God’s hand for He is their strength. And in my spirit I can see them walking their own Calvary path. And so I ask for a refreshing rain to fall on them as they take one more step. And in that gentle rain, may they smell or sense the presence of God’s Spirit that will assure them they are not alone or forgotten by the One who loves them best.

I come from a family that were and are farmers. Farmers live their lives by the weather. When spring comes, everyone works long hard hours preparing the soil and planting. Spring rains are received with gratitude as they are gentle soaking rains that encourage the crops to grow and store water for the hot summer days that are coming. When the crops come into their harvest, everyone again works long, hot hours to bring in the bounty and do some replanting to bring in the fall harvest before the first frost. I remember my mother sweating over large pots as she took the blessings of the garden and “canned” many, many jars of vegetables (tomatoes, different kinds of peas and beans, corn) that would keep us through until the next year. After we got a big chest-size freezer, she had a slightly easier task of freezing the vegetables.

I guess this is why I see my life in “seasons.” I have learned to savor those times of spring rains, when God is pouring His love out on me in so many ways and the path I am walking gets easier. I see the times of trial and hard work as those long, hot summers when I call on those “spring rain” memories and keep my hands on the plow and eyes on Jesus, one more day. Then there is the cool winds of fall when I sense that a time of winter may be coming and I need to spend more time by the warmth of God’s fire, His Word, and get ready for the long dark days ahead. The winters of my life have been the most difficult times as they seem to last longer than the other seasons when I hear the howling winds and cannot see past the present darkness. And farmers know about the unexpected drought, flooding, and early freezing temperatures that can destroy a crop. What makes a farmer keep trying year after year? Because it is what they have been ‘called’ to do and they remember the years of bounty. Some might call it stubbornness but Scripture calls it perseverance (Romans 5).

So let us turn our faces up and receive the LORD’s refreshing rain today. May it encourage and strengthen us. May others see us and turn their faces up too. Let it rain, LORD!

Child of the King

[reprinted from January 12, 2011]

Then, surrounded by the Pharisees, Jesus asked them a question: “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?”
They replied, “He is the son of David.”
Jesus responded, “Then why does David, speaking under the inspiration of the Spirit, call the Messiah ‘my Lord’? For David said,
“The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies beneath your feet.’

Since David called the Messiah ‘my Lord,’ how can the Messiah be his son?”
No one could answer him. And after that, no one dared to ask him any more questions. Matthew 22:41-46 (NLT)

I have become quite cynical about the media and their reporting of so-called newsworthy stories. First, their definition and mine on what is newsworthy has some very fundamental differences. There is a lot about a public person’s personal life that I don’t care about and I certainly do not think it is any of my business. Then there is the reporting of facts from the perspective of the reporter or the network/newspaper that will have a spin that reflects their agenda, leaving the validity of the facts in question. Having taken a statistics course I found out quickly that numbers can be presented to mean anything that I want them to mean. And facts can be valid but given out of context to mean something not valid.

Jesus was asking the church leadership to give their report on what they thought about the Messiah, specifically, who was His father. They stepped back from reporting the ‘bottom line truth’ – “He is the Son of God” – and instead tried to take the easy way and avoid the whole deity/man controversy and the Trinity controversy. They refused to stand up for what they believed and instead quoted God’s promise that the Messiah would come through the line of David.

What about me? Whose daughter am I? Do I think of myself as Bob and Marybelle’s daughter? Is who I am today defined by my life experiences? Are my accomplishments seen in a better light if I gloss them over with credentials and the “tragedies” portrayed as great obstacles that I have overcome? [I was actually interviewed once and the reporter spoke about my ‘tragic life’. Give me a break!]

Then I heard a loud voice shouting across the heavens, “It has happened at last – the salvation and power and kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ! For the Accuser has been thrown down to earth – the one who accused our brothers and sisters before our God day and night. And they have defeated him because of the blood of the lamb and because of their testimony. And they were not afraid to die. Rejoice, O heavens! And you who live in the heavens, rejoice! But terror will come on the earth and the sea. For the Devil has come down to you in great anger, and he knows that he has little time.”             Revelation 12:10-12 (NLT)

My life is my life today because Jesus died for me. The blood of Jesus overcomes the filthiness of my sins. My testimony of what Jesus has done in my life and keeps doing in my life overcomes my doubts and encourages me and others as I share that testimony. My son, James, testified through his life and death about the unlimited supply of courage and strength that Jesus will give. That has brought me to the place that I now know the assurance of a life in God’s strength that allows me to say, “I am not afraid!” Whether it is the death of my physical body or the death of myself so that Jesus’ plan lives out in me, I am not afraid. I am a daughter of my LORD and KING.

Whose Opinion Matters?

[reprinted from July 19, 2011]

They want to serve themselves and not Christ the Lord. Their flattery and fancy talk fool people who don’t know any better.    Romans 16:18 (CEV)

These people grumble and complain and live by their own selfish desires. They brag about themselves and flatter others to get what they want.    Jude 16 (CEV)

No matter your age, no matter your lot in life, what people say about you passes through your ears to your brain and, too often, gets stuck there. 99 44/100% of the time, whatever is said isn’t truly accurate and so should not be replayed in your head. But it is.

Paul, the most prolific New Testament writer, and Jude, that tiny, often missed letter just before Revelation, warn us about people and what they say. They use the word flatter. Paul’s warning seems to be pointed to those in the Church. He speaks about people who cause division and put obstacles that are in direct opposition to Jesus’ teaching. Yes, I know Believers who do that. “Keep away from them” Paul says (v. 17). Keep away from them if we are both Believers? Yup. They aren’t perfect and God isn’t done with them any more than He isn’t done with me! If you join a fellowship looking for perfection, you will be disappointed.

People say hurtful, destructive things offhand and purposefully. It seems to start in us very young and begins with “joking around” as we say things that “tease” or “cut down” in order to get a laugh. Is it really funny? We know that words are powerful. God spoke all that we know into being. God’s Word is Life. We also know that satan’s full-time job is to accuse us – and so his words try to destroy.

My husband wrote a book a few years ago, When People Speak for God. He is often asked by others, “How can I know what God’s will is for my life?” They want to know if their ideas, plans, decisions are from the voice of God – or not. Have you ever heard someone tell you that God told them to tell you something? How do you know it’s really God? How do you know it isn’t the person’s voice and it is, at best, mis-heard and at worse, a manipulation?

For although we are walking in the flesh, we do not wage war in a fleshly way, since the weapons of our warfare are not fleshly, but are powerful through God for the demolition of strongholds. We demolish arguments and every high-minded thing that is raised up against the knowledge of God, taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.   2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (HCSB)

We must intentionally consider the power of words in our lives. We must understand their power and utilize what God has given us to know and see His truths. He says we should “take captive every thought” and put them under the control of Jesus. It is Jesus that knows what is truth and what is just another lie of satan. It is the power of His Spirit that give us the discernment that we need to filter truth from lies.

We also need to recognize that it is God’s opinion, and only God’s opinion, that matters in my life. The applause of people, their appreciation for what I do, their criticism, their disapproval of what I do and to whom I devote my time can not be of importance to me. When I pay attention to what they think, I am not paying attention to what God thinks.

So let us take time today to take capture every thought and put it under the authority of Jesus and His Holy Spirit. Let us seek to hear Him and listen only to Him. That is Life to me.

Holy Love written and sung by Andy Park

The Radiance of God

When Moses came down Mount Sinai carrying the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant, he wasn’t aware that his face had become radiant because he had spoken to the Lord. So when Aaron and the people of Israel saw the radiance of Moses’ face, they were afraid to come near him.            Exodus 34:29-31 (NLT)

Lectionary texts: Exodus 34:29-43, Psalm 99, 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2, Luke 9:28-43

When I was a little girl and I went to church with my mother, she would kneel to pray and this peaceful, relaxed look would come over her face. As I grew older, I never found that kind of peace in the church. But I continued to watch my mother through the death of her parents, her husband and when she would sit beside her bed and pray, that peace was still there. I wanted that. It took me 40 years to find it. I’m a bit slow and stubborn.

This radiance that is told in both the Old Testament (Exodus 34) and the New Testament (Luke 9) tells me that spending time in the presence of God changes a person from the inside out. I have seen it other people, like my mother, and I have seen it when I look in the mirror. Spending time with God will change me. Notice that I did not say that it was about spending time in church. Spending time in church doesn’t necessarily put me in the presence of God any more than spending time in a garage makes me a car. (You’ve heard that one before, haven’t you?!)

Both in Exodus and Luke, the change or transfiguration that occurred frightened those who saw it. That is something to think about and remember. When I am in the presence of God, He welcomes me in. It is a holy and on-my-face experience but the “lowering” is my feeling because I know my unworthiness. God sees me through the grace of my relationship with Jesus and so I am welcome in that Holy Place (Hebrews 10). But as I observe others, as the Israelites and disciples did, maybe it is that looking from the outside in that is frightening and unknown. What does that change mean? How will it effect my life?

The radiance is also about the removing of the veil or the gulf of the unknown that separates me from God. As we grow together in our relationship, the light of His truth and knowledge replaces the dark deception of Satan’s lies and my own sin and confusion. Even that can be frightening as old myths, even traditions, can become swept away by God’s Spirit.

But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.

Therefore, since God in his mercy has given us this new way, we never give up. We reject all shameful deeds and underhanded methods. We don’t try to trick anyone or distort the word of God. We tell the truth before God, and all who are honest know this. 2 Corinthians 3:16-4:2 (NLT)

Peter wanted to put up a shelter, a building that would memorialize what he had seen on that mountain. God said, “Hush! Listen to my Chosen One.” God made it simple – just not easy to my flesh. The radiance or presence of God is not about a building. It is about me, His child, taking my Father with me wherever I go, whatever I do, and showing Him, unvarnished and unveiled, without embellishment or distortion to others.

How Great You Are

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.        Genesis 1:1-2 (NLT)

“In the beginning – God created …” It’s hard for me, born in the 20th century, to imagine the “nothingness” of the beginning of this earth. But I am a Star Trek fan so I would guess it would be like standing on a holodeck and then at the command of the Creator, the waters begin to separate and form from the formless.

God has always been. There is no time before God. That is a point of understanding beyond my grasp. It is a place of faith for me. I have found that to be a more comfortable place the older I get. I have learned there is much more that I don’t know than what I do know. And I am OK with that. I have become excited about waking up each morning and wondering what “new thing” I will learn today.

In the words that God speaks is the power to create something from nothing. Genesis chapters 1 and 2 give us two perspectives of creation. The first is the majesty and gloriousness of the power of God to bring all that we know into existence. It magnificent and breathtaking. And then in the second chapter is our LORD, personal and involved with what He has created. He isn’t about just being the Creator and so also the sovereign ruler. God is the Creator that is intimately and forever connected with His created ones, like a father is to his children. Too often we debate the how and when of creation to the point of missing the key element which is the Who.

He also says to the Son,

“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundation of the earth
and made the heavens with your hands.
They will perish, but you remain forever.
They will wear out like old clothing.
You will fold them up like a cloak
and discard them like old clothing.
But you are always the same;
you will live forever.”            Hebrews 1:10-12 (NLT)

The writer of the book of Hebrews is all about teaching us that Jesus is fully God and so was there at the creation. Jesus is describe as the Word in John’s gospel (Chapter 1) and so as God speaks the Word and creates so Jesus creates. God’s Spirit is said to hover over the waters and so the Spirit is also there. And so I see that mystery called the Trinity, Three in One.

This devotion may not have been tied up neatly in a bow. It may have left you with more “loose ends” or questions than when you started. Welcome to your faith walk, my friends. From Genesis, the beginning of no beginning, to Revelation, the end that never ends, we have an eternal life that is filled with God’s promises. He is faithful to fulfill them. What a life we have been given! How great You are, my LORD!
